Keywords Research: how to find, choose and use keywords to boost your website traffic

Keywords research is a necessary step for any online business.

Knowing what your target market searches for is guarantee for your success. However, without that knowledge, you might end up trying for months (or even years), and still not progress.

The main concept of keywords research is finding what your market searches for, and then optimize your website so that you rank for those keywords. What it means, is that next time a potential customers searches for what interests them online, they will see your website.

Here is a step-by-step guide on keywords research. It will help you find keywords for your niche, validate them, and them add them to your website.

1. Keywords Discovery

First step to keywords research is coming up with  a list of potential keywords. The most basic way to do it is simply to start writing down all the things that you believe your target audience to be interested in, and that you offer with your service and products.

Your keywords should be quite concrete. For example “psychology” is not a good keyword, as it can refer to anything: psychology degrees as well as psychology of customer behavior. You need to narrow down your search. Try: “marketing psychology”, “psychology of human behavior”, “psychology and human behavior”, etc

A simply to help you narrow down a broad keyword is Google search. Go to Google.com and start typing in the search box a keyword. You will see a dropdown of some of the common phrases people are searching for.

Another way to get ideas for your keywords is to check what your competitors rank for. If it’s working for them, than it should work for you, too.

You can also check keywords tools for suggestions. I am covering both these techniques in the video below.

2. Keywords Relevancy

Now that you have a list of keywords, you need to validate them and find the best ones.

To do this, you need to use a keywords tool. The most popular and super easy to use is Keywords Planner by Google. Here is a short video showing how to use this tool to check relevancy for your keywords.

3. Keywords Implementation

After you find your final lists of keywords, it’s time to add them to your website.

How do you do it?

First of all, you need an SEO plugin for your website. I use WordPress SEO (Read more & download >>). With this plugin, you will get a checklist of what to do to get a high score on your keywords.

  • The general rules for using keywords are:
  • Use one main keyword for post/page
  • Make sure your content is clearly linked to that keyword. Use both the actual keyword within the text, as well as related keywords.
  • It’s good to have your keyword in your url and meta description
  • Name your images using the keyword (and in general, use images, they help you rank as well)
  • Your posts should have minimum of 300 words
  • Use your keywords in the first paragraph of the copy
